In Tallinn in winter the sun rises around nine in the morning and sets by four, for most of the day the city lives in twilight. A lack of light affects more than mood: the body responds with less energy, you feel sleepy and it is harder to focus.
Yoga practice won’t solve this in one go, but regular movement and mindful breathing are among the simplest ways to get a little energy back in a season when there is objectively less of it. A few things that really work:
Move in the morning, not the evening. Even a short practice in the first half of the day helps the body “wake up” sooner than the dim winter sun can.
Breathe deeper than usual. In winter we unconsciously breathe more shallowly: cold air, closed rooms, less movement. A few minutes of mindful breathing at the start or end of the day noticeably changes how you feel.
Don’t chase intensity. In the dark months the body often needs a gentle practice (yin yoga, stretching, slow vinyasa), more than a strength workout pushed to the limit.
That is exactly why the studio schedule always has both dynamic and very calm classes, so you can choose what resonates on that particular day instead of following one plan all year.
